Horticultural College and Research Institute, Periyakulam is identified as the implementing centre for Varatar Nagalar sub basin activities under TNAU. This centre is located in the Southern Agro Climatic Zone of Tamil Nadu, developed many varieties in fruits and vegetables which are popular among the farmers within the state and the country. Some of the popular varieties are PKM1, PKM2, PKM3, PKM4 Sapota, PKM1 tomato, PKM1 Moringa and PKM1 Tamarind. Besides, this centre has standardized the production technologies for mango, sapota, acid lime, moringa, chillies and tube rose for the benefit of horticultural growers in Theni district and surrounding regions of the state.
